Causes of Poverty
Today we began a study on the causes of poverty ~ specific focus on Chapter 12 of the textbook. For those of you that are away, here is the outline of today's lesson.
1. Checked out cool website "Breathing Earth" ~ visual graphic of sustainability
2. We discussed the definition of the term "Poverty" ~ amazing website called "Why Poverty" - to help us and we watched the short film "Wilbur Goes Poor: Part 1" - interesting short clip that examines who the urban poor are living in India.
3. Powerpoint intro to Causes of Poverty, with a worksheet and practices MC questions to remind us about the HDI, global development terms, and the idea of the "Global South"
4. Split up into expert groups, and each group presented 7 causes and effects of global poverty. We discussed possible solutions to issues such as Hunger, HIV/AIDS, child labour, child soldiers, gender inequality, etc.
FOR HOMEWORK:
1. Read the handouts on Hunger and FAQs about Hunger ~ very important as textbook does minimal job explaining it.
2. Fill in the chart on the back of the worksheet for Poverty
3. Read and be extremely familiar (notes are recommended) on Chapter 12 ~ this is highly likely to be an essay question on your exam, and more importantly ~ it is interesting and important
Reminder: No class on Tuesday, the homework is what we would have been doing... please stay on top of things!
We review Poverty Issues and examine the concept of "aid" on Thursday ~ be prepared to debate and discuss...
