Freeze! Setting the Stage for WWI

Why did World War One break out? What were the causes that led to one of the most devastating global conflicts in recent times?

Today we examined an overview of the war by acting out freeze scenes in front of the class. These were the topics:

1. Europe in 1914
2. Conflict in the Balkans
3. Triggering Event - Assassination
4. Canada's Response to War
5. Schlieffen Plan
6. Trench Warfare

For homework, you were asked to read over the large handout, and take notes on a seperate piece of paper on the following topics:

• Economic Rivalries
• Nationalism
• Militarism (Arms Race)
• Spies
• Propaganda
• New Weapons of WWI

I would also suggest reviewing the term Total War, as well as the map of Europe. You will have a quiz on Pre-WWI Europe on Monday/Tuesday.
