Population Pyramids and Demographic Transition Model

Today's class explored a few different ideas, and also the 'math stuff' that is important to this study of demography.  If you missed class today, here are the notes to help you study for the Quiz on Friday.

1.  We discussed the concept of '7 Billion' -- what does that mean, what does that look like in terms of size and population?

VIDEO CLIP #1 - 7 Billion ~ What is Typical?
VIDEO CLIP #2 - 7 Billion ~ National Geographic

Both interesting clips that have some neat facts and information that frame the conversation.

2. Notes - pyramids and demographic transition model -- we recorded notes on the booklet "Population Problem Set".  Here's the powerpoint  for Population Problem Set #2

3. We read an article by Hans Rosling examining what a potential 9 billion population will look like for us, and what that means for us as a planet.

4. We began our conversation examining issues relating to Population, including China/India's attempts at Population Control and Family Planning.  We watched the first 5 minutes of the documentary "It's a Girl" - examining violence against women in India and China as a result of family planning.

***** Note - this is a very serious documentary that we will only be watching parts of ~ it will involve lots of conversation and discussion surrounding the issues that are extremely complex.  Stay tuned for more discussion next day.

HW:  Article Analysis - see post below, as well as studying for Demography Quiz (Chapter 11) on Friday.  Outline for quiz will be posted online tomorrow to help you study.
