Heroes and Victims - WWI and Canadian Identity

PICTURE: Billy Bishop - Canadian Fighter Pilot - Leading ace of WWI with 72 credited victories.

Today's class focused on an analysis of WWI battles and technology, and the way in which they impacted the development of Canada's national identity.

Class Activities:

1. Reviewed answers to WWI Battles Worksheet from last day. Emphasized key terms/ideas that we need to know for the unit - ex. Tanks were first used in the battle of the Somme.

2. Watched video clip of Trench Warfare - WWI

3. Examined the heroes and victims of WWI using worksheet "Rembering the War." This included:

  • Individual soldiers like Jerry Jones and fighter pilots like Billy Bishop (picture above), the Black Flight, & Red Baron

  • The battle of Vimy Ridge as one of Canada's greatest military victories
  • The War at Sea - German U-boats, wolfpacks, the convoy system, Halifax Explosion
HW: Make sure blog post is made before next class for full marks. Reminder of Unit Test on November 27, 2009.

Here is an interesting article about the youngest soldier to serve in the British Army in WWI. He was 12 years old.
