Preparing for the Election

 The BC election is starting this week, and the official election day is next Saturday.   Our class is going to participate in Student Vote on Thursday, and so we need to prepare for the election. 

Complete the following activities over the weekend, so that you are prepared for class on Monday. 

PART 1 - Background Information - Watch the following videos!  They will help you prepare and understand Canada's election system better. 

  • Take notes (in any language) on the information 

  • Describe a dictatorship
  • Describe an oligarch
  • Describe a democracy
  • Why would some people want to fight to protect their democratic rights? 
  • What is a criticism of democracy? 
Part 2: New Information - Canada's Government System

  • What are the three levels of government? 
  • Which level do you think impacts your daily life the most? Why?
Video 4: Our Electoral System - Important video to watch!
  • What is a riding? 
  • How come we don't vote for our Prime Minister or Premier directly?
  • What does a person do, if they are voted into government? 
  • How can you talk to, or communicate with your elected representative?

  • What is the name of the three candidates running for election in your riding?
