Intro to the Cold War

Welcome back after the long weekend, and Happy Olympics!  Canada is currently leading the world standings which is a first!

Last day we took a breather and did some basic review.  We went over the answers to the WWII test, and then began an intro to the Cold War.  We watched scenes from the movie Atomic Cafe depicting "duck and cover", reviewed some basic concepts, and worked on some Cold War maps.

Here are the notes that was for homework for today, plus chart -- Cold War Conflicts

Today's class was a further intro to the basic concepts in the Cold War including:

  • Origins of the Conflict
  • Ideological Struggle
  • Iron Curtain -- NATO vs. Warsaw Pact
  • Propaganda and the Red Menace
  • Cold War and Canada
Here is the powerpoint from today's class if you'd like to download it and take notes.

We also watched the Crash Course History clip on the Cold War. I would encourage you to use it as a study tool.    Homework for next class the following:

2. Pay attention to 'cold war' aspects visible in the current Olympics...
3. Re-watch the Crash Course video if it was a helpful overview -- there are also 2 other videos (Cold War: US History & Cold War in Asia) on Youtube
