Canadian Society during the Cold War

Welcome to our new unit on Canadian society during the Cold War. Utilizing our knowledge of Cold War politics, we are going to examine the social changes that were taking place throughout this time period. In our examination of society, we will explore changes in immigration patterns, working conditions, fashion and popular culture, music, and social values.

Today's Class: Canadian Post-War Society: 1950's

Our activities today consisted of a powerpoint on the 1950's, and we took notes on the main topic headings. Key points that were emphasized include:

  • Massey Commission - CBC, CRTC, Canada Council for the Arts, Hockey Night in Canada

  • Rise of the Suburbs and consumer culture - era of the automobile

  • Family Values of the Baby Boomer generation

  • Prosperity - working conditions, giant mega-projects, natural resources (oil), American investment

  • Exclusion of minorities - civil rights movement, Aboriginal peoples, ethnic minorities, single women

We then got the outline for our Cold War research project, while will be due at the end of the month. Presentations are optional.
