Webquest ~ World War II

Over Spring Break, you are expected to complete this Webquest.

This is your assignment for Spring Break - not too hard, hopefully very interesting.
Please answer the questions on a Microsoft Word Document with your full name and block and email the completed assignment to me at Alana.Sawatsky@sd41.bc.ca before our first class back from Spring Break. 

ASSIGNMENT: Each section will be assessed for accuracy, and the 'choice sections/questions' will be assessed for detail and writing quality.    /15

BATTLES

SECTION 1. Head to BBC's World History Site     this is an excellent resource
  • A. Expand "World War II - key events" --and open the timeline
    • Question 1 - In what year did Pearl Harbour occur, trigger the US' entrance into the war?
    • Question 2 - At the end of the war, which two countries were racing to Berlin to force the Nazis to surrender?  Who reaches Berlin first?  
    • Question 3 - How does Hitler eventually die? 
  • B. Head to "D-Day and Operation Overlord"  - and then click on D-Day Simulation and watch the animation
    • Question 1 - What was the date and time of day of this operation?
    • Question 2 - Where did this operation take place?
    • Question 3 - What were the 5 beachheads named?  What was the Canadian beachhead?   
    • Question 4 - Explain why this battle was so important to the Allies, and helped secure their victory in Europe.
           C. Head to "Battle in North Africa" Animated Map
      Question 1 - In what type of geographic landscape did this battle take place?  (forest, ocean, etc.)
      Question 2 - What did American Ernst Rommel's nickname become after this battle? Question 3 - Where was the key battle of this conflict?  'El _________________'
      Question 4 - In the last slide, it shows the Allies in Tunis.  Where do you think they will attack from here?

    • Review Question 1- Who was the Prime Minister of Britain during the Battle of Britain? 
    • Review Question 2 - How many nights straight was the city of London bombed during the 'blitz'? 
    • Review Question 3 - Who won the Battle of Britain?
    • Review Question 4 - Record one new interesting fact about the Battle of Britain
  • B. 'zoom out' and then select 'Yalta Conference' and read the text description
    • Question 1 - Which nations were considered 'the Big 3', and what were the names of the leaders?
    • Question 2 - In what month and year did the 'Big Three' meet in the city of Yalta?
    • Question 3 - What 3 issues were discussed at this conference?
    • Question 4 - The controversial agreements that were made set the stage for what major event following WWII?
  • C. 'zoom out' back to main page and select 'Leningrad siege'
    • Question 1 - In what country is Leningrad, and how long did the siege last? 
    • Question 2 - How many civilians died during the siege?  
  • D. zoom out and then play around in some of the other areas of the world, you might want to find out what the Manhatten Project was, or more about kamikaze pilots in Asia. 
  • CHOICE - Once you are finished exploring, record 3 interesting facts that you discovered from other areas.

SECTION 3.  HOLOCAUST 
Click on  BBC History's Genocide Page expand the section, and click on 'Interactive Map of 'Auschwitz'  
  • Question 1 - What were the Einzatsgruppen?
  • Question 2 - Enter into the 'Auschwitz' camp.  What happened in the crematorium? 
  • Question 3 -  What happened in the 'Kanada' room?   
  • CHOICE - Record some of your thoughts about the Holocaust that you considered, as you completed this activity.
SECTION 4.  BATAAN DEATH MARCH
Head to Eyewitness History - a site of primary source documents that help bring some of the stories of WWII to life.  Warning, this is a bit difficult to read.

          Question 1- Where did the Bataan death march take place?
           Question 2 - What were some of the brutal tactics that the Japanese enacted on the Prisoners of War? 
          Question 3 - Do you think soldiers that survived can recover from surviving an event like this? Support your thesis with detail.  

OPTIONAL:  Play the Battle of the Atlantic game and see you if you can win!
